an anniversary of great importance

Besides being my birthday, August 1 was an anniversary of great importance for me.

As of August 1, 2010, I’ve been in my wonderful apartment for one year.

That might not seem like a big deal to you, but it is to me.

It’s the first apartment or house I’ve inhabited in Seattle all by myself.

I came to Seattle with my mom in June 2000, and lived with her for 4 years.

Then I lived with my son and daughter-in-law for a year and a half.

In the summer of 2007, I got the chance to rent part of a house, with a wonderful family, in the amazing Seattle Beacon Hill neighborhood.

Finally, last summer, I finally achieved financial and emotional stability, and moved into my apartment.

If you’ve read this far, thanks for reading the sanitized version of my 10 years in Seattle.

It was a very hard journey for me, to watch my mom slowly die, witness other members of my family struggle, and experience the toll it all took on my mind and body.

The last three years have been a renewal for me, a chance to travel through a sea of grief, and come out the other side to pound my fists in the air and whoop with jubilation.

Along the way I’ve cried a million tears, doubled over with laughter whenever I got the chance, and learned how to keep my mouth shut instead of engaging in useless argument.

So I started year 2 in my great apartment on Sunday.

Sunday afternoon, I enjoyed a birthday party with my family gathered around me. I looked at their happy faces and was glad that I had been able to help them, during those tough times, that they had been able to help me, that we are family and love each other through good times and bad.

And now, I need to stop typing so I can watch a new ‘Ghost Hunters International’ on syfy.

It’s a warm night in Seattle, my patio doors are open, and my rocking patio chair (shown above) is there when I need it, to have a place to sit and just be as I listen to the noises in my neighborhood.

It’s grand.

An anniversary of great importance.
