Monthly Archives: August 2009

Jeeze Louise, I love Sunday.

I’ve got a cup of coffee by my side, and the Sunday Seattle Times awaits me.

Yesterday I walked over to target and bought a new crock pot–my current one is too small. Today I’m cooking vegetable beef soup.

I usually come home from work exhausted and brain dead. So I like to cook meals on the weekend. Then all I have to do is reheat and serve myself dinner.

Now that I have a full kitchen, I’m going to be trying out lots of new recipes. I’ve decided to purchase the Barefoot Contessa’s cookbook, Back to Basics. I want an actual cookbook at my side when I’m trying out new recipes, I guess I’m old fashioned (at least in this matter).

When I make my vegetable beef soup, I need lots of veggies.

Today, I chopped up zucchini, small red potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, mushrooms, a can of Italian stewed tomatoes and a can of beef broth. I topped this off with a bay leaf and some pepper.

I will let this cook for about 8 hours, on low, and consume with some Italian-style wheat bread.

I’m getting lots of rest this weekend, finished reading The Time Traveler’s Wife last night, and watched Ted Kennedy’s funeral on CNN yesterday. This was the 3rd Kennedy funeral I’ve watched on television. One CNN commentator mentioned that of the three brothers (Jack, Bobby, Ted), Ted was the only one who lived long enough to see his grandchildren.

Last night, I watched the remake of War of the Worlds, with Tom Cruise. Tom is good, but Tim Robbins, who

It was very scary!

That’s all for now.

I’ve found it hard to write this post, I guess because I’m out of practice!

Life as a real pip

Paxil is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. From

I have a new profile picture on Google and Blogger.

It’s Paxil head, above.

And no, I’m not taking Paxil.

I’m actually pressing on Mr. Paxil head, a terrific thick sponge, as a means of relieving stress.

It’s helping, a lot!

As I say goodbye to August, I’m looking at the month of September with a renewed sense of purpose.

August has been a month filled with mixed blessings, new (and unexpected) challenges, some tears, and lots of laughs.

I’m going to spend this weekend (and hopefully next) reading, walking around my neighborhood, and watching movies.

Oh yeah.

And I’ll need to do some cleaning tomorrow.

Not too much, just enough to maintain.

And yes, I will be stopping by some of your blogs, and commenting (at last).

Hello there

I’m blogging on my lunch break, so I have to make this quick.

Life has been a real pip the last few weeks, so I’ve been kinda cranky and out of sorts, in addition to being sick, and tired, and, you all know the story, right?

Right now I’m working for the weekend, and I hope things are going to quiet down next week.

I’ve got big plans for the Labor Day Weekend–sleeping, reading, going to the movies (Julie & Julia, The time Traveler’s wife), and being generally irresponsible for 3 whole days.

So this post is an explanation, my pathetic excuse for not stopping by your blogs and commenting.

I was just too whiny and cross last night to do much on the computer.

no whining today

I’m feeling better after a good night’s rest.

’nuff said.

my week in review

-Out of a 5-day work week, I made it to work 2.5 days this week.

-I’ve had a splitting headache all week, mostly due to my sinuses.

-I also had a stomach flu.

-The family stuff ain’t over yet; another situation has emerged. Not my story, so I’m stayin’ mum, but my family needs me right now.

-The BRAND NEW, NEVER USED until I moved in, dryer in my apartment is not working properly. SEARS may have to come out, and you know what THAT means!

The good news is that it’s been cool and rainy here in Seattle all week.

But wait, by midweek next week, it’s supposed to be almost 90 degrees again.

So, as you can tell, I am Crabby McCrabberton tonight.

I’m going to bed early tonight, because tomorrow is my grandson Luka’s 6th birthday, and I’m going to join the festivities.

And I will stop bitching, because I really have a lot to be thankful for.

It just doesn’t seem like it right now.

Broccoli angst

I haven’t cooked in so long, I feel like I’m learning all over again.

And I’m rarely too sick to eat.

Tonight I made one of my favorite meals, broccoli with spaghetti (click on the pic to see more detail).

It’s simple; I cooked up some Barilla whole wheat spaghetti, then threw in some fresh broccoli. I messed up by cooking the broccoli too long (I like my broccoli with a bit of snap to it).

Oh well.

Then I drained the pasta and broccoli, and melted some butter in a pan (you can use margarine, but I prefer butter).

Then I mixed everything together, and added some grated cheese and black pepper.

The melted butter and grated cheese really helped my disappointment regarding the overcooked broccoli.

And this was cooked in my new Paula Deen 6 quart stockpot.

I’ve gotta let go of my broccoli angst, I know.

I’m working on it.

I’m feeling a bit better tonight, and will head out for work tomorrow.

Not feeling well

I went to work today but came home early.

Feeling a bit better, after a nap.

More later.

Not feeling too well today

Thanks to a fairly severe asthma attack early this morning.

I will post more tomorrow.

Here’s a picture of my new quilt, complete with bed ruffle and pillow shams.

The view from my balcony tonight!

After weeks of hot dry weather, we finally have rain!

bill collectors looking for someone else…

I posted the other day about a company calling my land line home phone number and asking for someone I do not know.

I think I have resolved this issue, and here’s what I did:

–I Googled the phone number that was calling me, and found that lots of other people were having the same problem.

–As I clicked on links, I found the name, address, and telephone number of the company.

–This morning, I called the company (located in Maryland), and requested that my telephone number not be called again, and the reason why.

–The company spokesperson was most pleasant, apologized for calling me, and told me the “do not call” will go into effect in 24 hours. This person also gave me a file number, which I will keep in my records.

–Over the weekend, I filed a complaint with the National Do Not Call Registry, because callers from this company were not honoring my word that the person they were looking for was not at my telephone number.

*This is an important point, folks: You need to find the company calling you and contact them directly.

I also checked the Better Business Bureau website, and the company that has been calling me has an “F” rating. Should the calls from this company continue, I will file a complaint with the BBB, and include the file number and the name of the person I spoke with this morning.

I hope this helps, and I will keep you all informed.
